When You Present the Bill Do You Do This?

Write happy holidays with a smiley face. Or draw a happy face with a big thank you and exclamation point.

I don't write anything on the back of the cheque when I present it in a bill fold. I just say thank you and have a great Christmas or whatever occasion it may be. Either that or a simple thank you with eye contact.

Now here is my question. Do you think your tip percentages increase when you write something on the bill or does it go unnoticed with very little input as to how much the guest leaves you?

Maybe you are like me and do not write anything.

Let me know...

I don't write anything with any regularity; it doesn't seem to make a difference. The only thing I always write is "Gratuity not included" at the top of the check for a large party!

I know the amount I tip has nothing to do with anything other than the service I received. In my opinion smiley faces and comments are for facebook friends and the like, not customers. That kind of stuff always seems silly to me. Give me professional every time.

For me personally, as a customer it doesn't matter either way. Either way they are taking that extra 30 seconds or whatever to wish you a Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday extra.

I heard a smily face increases your tip by 10% 3.00 tip smily face becomes 3.25-3.50

Purplegirl....now that is worth writing!

Laine and Alex...jokingly when I see someone adding a heart or smiley face to a bill I say oh that will be worth 1-2%. Of course it doesn't add anything and I wonder why bother taking the time to draw something when you should just verbally thank them anyway.

Anonymous...really? How I am wondering would anyone know. That is a lot when you add it up over a year.

Bek...true and it is a nice thought to add on to the bill.

Like purplegirl I don't have anything I do regularly. Sometimes a smiley face or a thanks, most of the time nothing. I was leaving little cards from our restaurant with "Ask for Marta Next Time" on them, but it became annoying to me, so I stopped.

The Veteran Server...yes that might get annoying. I dislike when people actually look to sit in my section just cause they might like extra special attention. It is the same for everyone I say.

The only time I write anything is if there was a problem or if the customers were especially nice. In those situation I may write "thank you" on the check. Normally I write nothing.

LW...alright a little of each. When you wamt to add that something extra is when you do it. Okay.

I don't think smiley faces work- unless you're a hot blonde. A genuine 'thank-you', looked square in the eyes does the trick for me. No cutesy stuff should be done by anyone over 25.
