It Was Going To Happen Sooner or Later

I was opening today ready to start back after a day off and make some money. When a waiter opens he or she has to prepare for the baked potatoes that come off the line during service. In other words prep the sour cream , butter , bacon bits , cut the parsley and chives enough for the evening.

So I am moving along well ahead of time and all I have to do is cut the chives and parsley. I start cutting the chives when I decide to cut a piece of skin off the tip of my thumb. Blood wouldn't stop coming out. My night ended early when I had to head to the clinic and have it seen to and fill out the Workmen's Compensation Form.

It is not serious and didn't require stitches but it needs the night to knead. I will be back tomorrow.

But honestly why does the opener have to cut this stuff when there is a kitchen crew that can do it safer and quicker. I really didn't miss tonight cause of my waiter experience but more to do with my lack of prep experience. At home I can do things but in the industry where I have to cut lots then why not let the experienced hands do it?

Maybe the good thing is they will not put me as an opener anymore. That would be nice , but they will cause no one else wants to open. No waiter wants to cut parsley and chives.

Am I wrong or am I just whining??????

hola waiter ex,
i've been in some similar situation where i had accidents(cuts, bruises, etc) & thinking somebody else should be doing the job. It's a temporary feeling i guess(emotional).
But you're right, the kitchen should be the one doing those kind of preps, especially concerning food items. They are trained to do it, not to mention hygiene purposes. From my past experiences everything food related came from the kitchen(BP, chives, cheeses, toasts, etc).
Sorry that you lost ur tips! Goodluck on this week!

Rio...welcome and thank you for your input.I have to agree with you on all counts. Besides the extra half hour I am scheduled on for to do all this prep they could probably save in labor cost over the year by having one of the prep people do it who have been there since 8am. That would be win win for both me and the company.

I wouldn't trust a Waiter to cut a fart withiout taking off his thunmb...hehehehe!
Really, any knifework beyond Lemon Wedges and maybe bread should fall to the kitchen.
Places I worked we lways took care of Scallions....you don't want waiters smelling like onions either.

Bulletholes..what I am getting from people is a waiter should be doing as you say no more than bread and some garnishes with a knife.Fortunately I missed only a night and the bleeding stopped eventually after going to a clinic. Filled the Workmens Compensation anyhow so should get a whopping few dollars for the missed income. Ha
