Tip Number #4 on Making More Money

This tip on making more money can never change. It is your integrity and reputation that is on the line and this tip has to be performed each and every shift.

I was taking a dinner order from this gentleman last night. It was a New York Steak of which we offer two sizes , a 10 and 14 oz. Asking whether he wanted the bigger size of 14 oz , the gentleman said sure I will take that instead of the 10oz. Puffing out my chest because of my upsell , I walked over to the register to punch it in when I noticed we were right out of the bigger size.

What did I do , you ask? Well I punched in the 10 oz New York that we did have to get the meal started. But rather than just let him think it was a 14 oz he was getting , I went over to him immediately after to tell him we were out of the 14 oz and that we only had the 10 and would he be happy with that.

I figured he would be when I asked him if it was okay but if he wasn't a run into the kitchen to take it off the grill would have had to be executed.

The point of the matter and this is my tip number #4 is always be honest and tell the truth to the customer if you do not have something available that is on the menu. Nothing is worse than a customer thinking he has been duped into eating or drinking something that he did not order. It will come back to haunt you.

I see it when some Scotch whiskey drinkers order a particular single malt they love then the bartender thinks that person will not notice the difference if he or she serves another in it's place if the one requested is not available. People who know their Scotches know the difference between many. The same goes for Food. If that person had ate a 14 oz NY before where I work he would have easily been able to tell the difference. Besides on the bill it would have said 10 oz , not 14.

So my tip for today on making more money is always be honest with the customer. If not , not only will you not make money you may find yourself out of work.
